SAVE THE
AMAZON
In 20 years, humanity has destroyed an area of the Amazon rainforest the size of France. More than a tenth of all animal species that share the planet with us live there. However, by burning the rainforest, all these living beings are losing their home – or even their lives. But it’s not “just” animals that live in the Amazon rainforest, there are also over 1.5 million Indigenous people – ancient tribes whose home is being destroyed along with the forest. Can you imagine someone suddenly coming to your city, ordering you to leave, and then burning it all down?

Facts
In the past 20 years, an area of the rainforest the size of France has been destroyed. Between 2001 and 2020, the Amazon lost over 54.2 million hectares of forest – almost one-tenth of its total area. In Brazil, which contains 60% of the Amazon rainforest, about 17% of the original forest had been deforested by 2022.

Future
According to data from the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), 17% of Amazon forests have been completely lost, while another 17% are degraded. These figures are alarming because scientists warn that reaching 20-25% deforestation could represent a tipping point beyond which the rainforest may no longer be able to recover and could turn into savannah.
